Meet the team - Sam

Sam is 22 and lives in Minehead, although he would like you to believe he lives in Porlock where he grew up (or failed to do so). Sam's main pastimes are eating, drinking ale (or cider, whiskey, wine or bleach), arguing and thieving*.

*(Officially none of this is true)

Sam is a firm believer in Buddhism and in borrowing money from people who are soon to have a nasty, terminal, accident. He models himself on Buddha, by which I mean he sits still for long periods of time and is fat.

Sam hopes that achieving such a thing as a 2800 mile bike ride will make him more world-wise, better travelled, more intelligent, fitter, stronger, faster, a better navigator, and more socially adept. Everyone else hopes he will lose 4 stone and not get into any fights.

This is Sam doing what he loves best - thieving fish from the Bristol Channel while his attack-hound scans the sea for scuba-diving cops.

Sam isn't a big fan of training due to it's tiring qualities, but believes that the trip will be easy enough because it doesn't look far on the map. He has done thorough and exhaustive reserch into nutrition and cycling fitness, but has decided his best approach is to eat multiple pies, drink plenty of beer and just keep peddling and swearing until he gets to the pub at the end of each day.

In an incredibly selfless act of charity Sam will be putting himself through 5 weeks of pain and suffering to raise money for the Air Ambulance and the British Heart Foundation. This has nothing to do with the fact that he is morbidly obese and lives in the middle of nowhere. Sam is a strong supporter of the air ambulance (his belly has been declared suitable as a helipad).

He estimates that his recovery time after completion of the trip will be about 8 months and hopes to qualify for statutory sick pay during that period.
